The 100 Most Commonly Read Words

Bold words are Concrete; the Blue words are Abstract.

Words are ordered by decreasing frequency of use.

Magical I Am calls these words “Sight Words” and more specifically as Abstract Words because the majority (86%) of these 100 words are abstract words.

Educators and groups (e.g., Fry, Dolch) all have their own list of “Sight Words” to learn … words that are to be recognized “on sight” without applying the rules of phonics or phonetics to them.

The Missing Link

The missing reading link that Sky Village – Trail of Spells™ provides is learning “How to read the 300 “Most Commonly Read Abstract (Sight) Words and Abstract Symbols.”

Teachers regularly drill these words until they are memorized, hoping these words will make it into long-term memory.  However, unlike words that are concrete, most of these “Commonly Read Words” are abstract, (they have no innate sensory or physical association) and they become the common stumbling blocks connected with most interrupter reading disability symptoms.

There is notable confusion among the education experts for how to learn to read the Most Commonly Read Words … and it starts with not agreeing on what to call the words! Academia distinguishes this group of 100 words by nine different names:

  1. Abstract Words

  2. Dolch Words

  3. Fry Words

  4. Interrupter Words

  5. Outlaw Words

  6. Most Commonly Read Words

  7. Sight Words

  8. Trigger Words

No matter what the label for this group of words, up till with the popular teaching method of rote and drill, unfortunately many of these words are still inconsistently read by too many children… resulting in lack of reading comprehension and fluidity in reading.

The First 29 Most Commonly Used English Words are Abstract Words.

Abstract Sight words make up over 50% of all printed material in grades K-5.
