For Children Who Are Learning to Read

Note to Parents: for older children or children resisting learning, the key question for the parent to ask your child is:  “Do you have a problem, and do you want a solution?”

To start:

Ask your child to pick the book they want to read with you.

How to Read a Sentence Process:

The child reads one sentence aloud … the child and parent use Easy Written Vocabulary Builder as needed – (link is below).

Once the child reaches a punctuation full stop; the parent stops the child’s reading & asks –

“What did you see?” or

“What is the picture that formed?” or

“What did you feel? “

The parent urges the child to go to their strengths for learning: their visual-spatial talents (picturing) and other senses, to their feelings, or to their intuition.

When the child reads individual sentences with certainty of understanding, the child can then read two sentences before being asked about what they saw, felt, or intuited. Continue adding another sentence to the amount read before asking what was seen, felt, intuited, until paragraphs are being read before explaining what they read.
